Pro Swing Trader Daily Brief
Thursday, October 22, 2026

Good morning. You didn't get a brief on Tuesday or Wednesday, and a lot happened. So this one is a catch-up.Start with a number: $84,000.

Bitcoin ran into it twice last week, on October 13 and 14, and got turned away both times. It was the ceiling.

On Wednesday, it walked straight through. By midday in New York it had hit $84,856, and it spent the whole afternoon holding above $84,000.

Then, after the US close, Tesla and Meta reported. Within about six hours Bitcoin dropped more than $2,000. By 5 a.m. Thursday it had touched $81,546, a drop of about $3,300 from the high (Coinbase).

So the ceiling broke. And the move didn't stick. Both of those are true, and both matter.

What you missed on Tuesday and Wednesday

The short version, in order:

  • Monday: Bitcoin closed at $81,838. US spot ETFs took in $527 million, the biggest day in nearly a month (TFTC).

  • Tuesday: BTC dipped to $81,081 overnight, then jumped about $1,700 in roughly three hours on Tuesday morning to close an hour above $83,000. I can't point to a cause for that jump, so I won't invent one.

  • Wednesday: ETFs took in another $528 million, the biggest day this month. Bitcoin broke $84,000 for the first time in a week.

That's the whole story of the week so far. Now let's see why Thursday looks different.

Why Thursday morning is red

CoinDesk ties the overnight drop to two things: Tesla and Meta results that didn't calm worries about AI spending, and a rough night in Asia.

  • Tesla fell about 3% after hours after cutting its spending forecast. Meta rose about 2% after raising its AI spending plans (CoinDesk).

  • Chip-equipment maker Lam Research fell 7% after hours on a weak outlook.

  • Asia took it hard. South Korea's Kospi fell about 3.5%, Japan's Nikkei nearly 3%, and China's CSI 300 fell 2%, which puts it 20% below its June peak, a bear market by the usual rule.

  • Nasdaq 100 futures were down about 1.3% by 7 a.m. ET.

That's a lot of stock-market worry for Bitcoin to carry. It fell about 2.7% on the day so far, to around $81,800 (CoinDesk).

Oil is back above $112

Brent crude rose above $112 a barrel this morning, its highest since May. US crude topped $100 (CoinDesk).

You've seen this before. Dearer oil feeds inflation, inflation keeps rates high, and high rates are a headwind for risky assets. Gold fell more than 1% to below $4,100 at the same time, so nobody's hiding in it either.

The ETF scoreboard just flipped

This one is good news, and the numbers are big. US spot Bitcoin ETFs took in about $1.08 billion over the first three days of the week:

  • Monday: +$526.6M

  • Tuesday: +$23.2M

  • Wednesday: +$528.4M, the biggest day this month

October started this week at −$617M. It now sits at +$461M (TFTC, The Block).

Ether ETFs also did something: Wednesday's +$14.9M ended a streak of five days in a row of outflows (The Block).

Here's the catch. CoinDesk's headline for this one says it all: $1 billion in three days "may not be enough for a steep rally". Money came in, and the price still fell overnight. Flows help. They don't guarantee.

Also on the radar

  • China wants to seize 61,800 BTC. The coins are tied to a $5.7 billion fraud case (CoinDesk).

  • SpaceX and Tesla are exploring a merger. Together they'd hold more than 30,000 bitcoin (CoinDesk).

  • Solana's Alpenglow upgrade is live, shortening transaction finality to about 150 milliseconds (The Block).

  • One correction. Monday's calendar listed SpaceX results for Thursday after the close. CoinDesk's Wednesday coverage says the results were already out. I had that date wrong, so I've dropped it from this week's list.

What's on today and tomorrow

All times Eastern.

  • Today, 8:30 a.m.: US jobless claims. No consensus numbers were listed when I checked.

  • Friday, 9:45 a.m.: flash PMIs. At 10:00, University of Michigan sentiment and inflation expectations.

  • Next Tuesday and Wednesday: the Fed meets. As of Monday, markets gave a hold about an 85% chance (FXStreet).

Today's takeaway

Bitcoin spent a week trying to break $84K, finally did, and then lost $3,300 in a night. It's now a bit under its weekly open of $82,007, which means the week is back to square one.

The line I'm watching is $82,500, the support CoinDesk flagged, and now resistance. Above it on a closing basis, the story is "recovery". Below $81,000, last week's lows come back into play.

Inside Premium today

Monday's result: our "recovery" scenario was the one that played out, and our "chop" range was wrong on the upside, which is how it should be written. We also never got the $85,000 target.

Today in Premium:

  • The plan to the weekend. What happens above $82,500, and what happens under $81,081?

  • 25 BTC key levels, each with its source, including Wednesday's new high.

  • ETH after $2,524: which cited levels sit above and below.

  • Options and funding check: the $85,000 and $86,000 calls everyone's trading, and what the volatility index says.

🔒 Scenario C: BTC hourly close below $8█,███ with Nasdaq futures still falling → next zone $7█,███–$8█,███

Premium readers get all of this below 👇

Premium: Scorecard (Monday's week plan, Oct 19)

Monday's plan had three branches. A was "recovery" (an hourly close above $83,076 with stocks holding). B was "chop" (BTC between $80,694 and $83,076, wrong on a daily close above $83,556 or under $80,565). C was "stress" (an hourly close under $80,565).

A was the live branch.

A · hourly close above $83,076: right. It happened on Tuesday, in the 10 a.m. ET hour, at $83,179.

A · targets: mostly right. BTC reached the $83,556–$83,678 opens and the $84,062–$84,262 highs, then topped at $84,856 on Wednesday. The $85,000 target wasn't reached.

A · "wrong if" (back under $82,007 on an hourly close within a day of clearing $83,076): not triggered. The lowest hourly close afterwards was $82,442.

B · chop: wrong, on the upside. Wednesday's daily close was $84,025, above the $83,556 line. That's what the "wrong if" was there for.

C · stress: not triggered. The Tuesday low was $81,081, well above $80,565.

ETH: right on direction. ETH reached $2,484 and a Wednesday high of $2,524, short of $2,538. The $2,311 floor wasn't touched (Tuesday's low was $2,369.51).

"Before Wednesday's earnings wave," upside branch: right. The plan said solid earnings keep the run going, and a miss means "sell-the-news risk at the same zone". It ran to $84,856 before the earnings, then gave back $3,300 after.

What we got wrong: the B range ($80,694 to $83,076) was too tight for a week where daily ranges ran from about $1,400 to $2,300. It was always going to break one way. Also, the calendar had SpaceX on the wrong day.

What we learned: from now on, ranges are sized to the recent daily range, not to the last two lows. And the plan needs a line for "ETFs buy, price falls anyway".

Premium: Key levels (cited)

25 BTC levels, each with its source.

BTC, above:

  • $86,996: the Oct 5 high (Coinbase daily candle).

  • $85,000: a horizontal barrier in FXStreet's technical note (AI-assisted, Oct 16), and the focus of options this week (CoinDesk, Oct 22).

  • $84,856: Wednesday's high, 12 p.m. ET hour (Coinbase).

  • $84,062–$84,262: the Oct 12–14 highs, now cleared (Coinbase).

  • $83,678: the Oct 12 open (Coinbase).

  • $83,556: October's open (Coinbase).

  • $83,076: Monday's high (Coinbase).

BTC, the middle:

  • $82,500: support flagged by CoinDesk (Oct 21 to 22), now being retested from below.

  • $82,007: this week's open (Coinbase).

  • $81,546: Thursday's low so far, 5 a.m. ET hour (Coinbase).

  • $81,500: the cost basis of the spot ETFs, as cited by analysts via FXStreet (Oct 15).

  • $81,081: Tuesday's low (Coinbase).

  • $81,000–$81,250: the largest visible block of Binance spot bids (Glassnode, Oct 7, so fifteen days old).

BTC, below:

  • $80,694: the Oct 16 low (Coinbase).

  • $80,625: the 50-day EMA (FXStreet, Oct 19, AI-assisted).

  • $80,565: the Oct 18 low (Coinbase).

  • $80,000: the psychological level buyers have defended (CoinDesk). Analysts quoted by CoinDesk warned a sustained break of $82,500 could open a slide toward $70,000.

  • $79,664–$79,676: the SuperTrend level (FXStreet, Oct 19) and the Oct 15 low (Coinbase).

  • $78,661: the 61.8% retracement of the move from the August 2024 low to the October 2025 high (FXStreet, AI-assisted, Oct 16).

  • $78,000: a large bitcoin put spread flagged by Derive targets it (CoinDesk, Oct 16). The "True Market Mean" is also near $78,000 (analysts cited by FXStreet).

  • $78K–$79K: October 30 options max pain (Crypto Briefing, Oct 8 data, so two weeks old).

  • $77,128: the 100-day EMA (FXStreet, Oct 19).

  • $75,000: a liquidation cluster flagged by Glassnode (Oct 7).

ETH:

  • $2,781 and $2,636: the next hurdles above (FXStreet, Oct 16, AI-assisted).

  • $2,600: FXStreet's upside target (Oct 19).

  • $2,548 and $2,538: a horizontal barrier and the 20-day EMA (FXStreet, Oct 16).

  • $2,524: Wednesday's high (Coinbase).

  • $2,484: the 50-day EMA (FXStreet, Oct 19).

  • $2,446: Tuesday's close (Coinbase).

  • $2,408: this week's open (Coinbase).

  • $2,392: Thursday's low so far (Coinbase).

  • $2,370: Tuesday's low (Coinbase).

  • $2,360: the 100-day EMA (FXStreet, Oct 19).

  • $2,354.38 and $2,325.48: the Oct 17 and Oct 18 lows (Coinbase).

  • $2,313.07 and $2,311: the Oct 14 low (Coinbase) and the 200-day EMA (FXStreet, Oct 19).

  • $2,204, $1,971 and $1,827: deeper supports if $2,311 breaks (FXStreet, Oct 15).

Premium: Scenario plan (to the weekend)

These are conditional scenarios, not predictions or buy/sell calls. A "break" needs an hourly close, not a wick. Ranges here are sized to this week's daily ranges of about $1,400 to $2,300.

Where BTC starts: near $81,800, just under this week's open of $82,007. ETH starts near $2,402.

The drivers:

  1. AI stocks. Nasdaq 100 futures were down about 1.3% this morning. Another leg down is the biggest risk.

  2. Brent crude, above $112, its highest since May.

  3. BTC against $82,007 and $82,500.

  4. Today's jobless claims (8:30 a.m.) and Friday's PMIs and Michigan survey.

A · Reclaim: stocks steady, Brent stops rising, and BTC makes an hourly close above $82,500, then above $84,000.

  • BTC: $83,076 → $83,556–$83,678 → $84,062–$84,262 → $84,856 → $85,000.

  • ETH: $2,446 → $2,484 → $2,524 → $2,538–$2,548 → $2,600.

  • This scenario is wrong if: BTC clears $82,500 but falls back under $82,007 on an hourly close within a day.

B · Chop: stocks mixed, BTC between $81,081 and $82,500.

  • BTC: $81,081 to $82,500, with $81,546 and $82,007 inside.

  • ETH: $2,370 to $2,446.

  • This scenario is wrong if: BTC has a daily close under $81,000 or above $83,076.

C · Stress: Nasdaq falls again or Brent keeps climbing, and BTC makes an hourly close under $81,081.

  • BTC: $80,694 → $80,565 → $80,000 → $79,664–$79,676 → $78,661 → $78,000.

  • ETH: $2,370 → $2,325 → $2,311–$2,313 → $2,204.

  • This scenario is wrong if: BTC slips under $81,081 but the daily close is back above $82,000.

Combinations: a steady Nasdaq plus easing oil is the cleanest case for A or B. A second down day in tech plus Brent still rising is C, and C could move quickly: the $80.5K to $81K zone has held on closes all week, and a break there would be new information. Remember that ETFs have bought $1.08 billion this week and the price fell anyway. Don't count on flows alone.

Before the Fed meets next Tuesday, in both directions:

  • If BTC closes an hour above $84,000 before the weekend, then a calm Asian open means a run at $84,856 to $85,000. A weak one means a repeat of Wednesday's fade at the same zone.

  • If BTC closes an hour under $81,081 before the weekend, then weak Asian stocks mean a fast move to $80,694 and $80,565. A steady open means a bounce, but BTC would need to reclaim $82,000 first.

Premium: Options and funding check

DVOL is 38.29 on Deribit (Thursday morning), up from 37.10 on Wednesday. CoinDesk says Volmex's bitcoin and ether implied volatility indexes (BVIV and EVIV) sit just above their 2026 lows. That's calm for a $3,300 move.

The most-traded options. The $85,000 and $86,000 calls expiring October 30 were the most traded over the past 24 hours, but short-dated skew still favors puts (CoinDesk). Some traders are betting on the upside, and the same market is still paying more for downside protection.

Funding (OKX, 8h): BTC +0.0100%, ETH +0.0070%. Both are positive, and BTC's is up from +0.0058% on Monday. Warm, not hot. Market-wide, liquidations rose 52% to $431M while open interest fell 2.5%. That's longs being forced out, and not new shorts being added.

Open interest: OKX BTC perp open interest is 30,456 BTC ($2.49B), a bit above Monday's 30,218 BTC.

Next big expiry: Friday, October 30, 4 a.m. ET. Crypto Briefing's Oct 8 data had about $11B notional with max pain at $78,000 to $79,000. It's two weeks old and I haven't refreshed it, so treat it as a rough map. Max pain is a positioning measure, not a forecast.

Whales: no new confirmed move today.

What I'm watching

  • Whether BTC reclaims $82,500 on an hourly close, and whether $81,546 holds.

  • Today's jobless claims and Friday's PMIs.

  • The Nasdaq open, and Kospi again tonight.

  • ETF flows: will Thursday's number show buyers or a pause?

  • The next scorecard is Friday's edition.
