BTC turned at $84K again and slid to $81K. Now it's all about CPI

Pro Swing Trader Daily Brief
Tuesday, October 13, 2026

Good morning.

Yesterday we said BTC turned at $84K on Sunday. On Monday it went back to the same spot, tagged $84,262, and turned again.

From there it was one-way traffic. The daily close at 8 p.m. ET was $81,742, down 2.3% on the day. Overnight BTC dipped to $80,927 before buyers showed up. As I write, it's around $82.8K.

ETH took the bigger hit, down 3.6%. Overnight it touched $2,406, almost exactly last week's low of $2,405, and bounced to about $2,480.

This wasn't a crypto-news drop. The dollar got stronger, oil went up, and a Fed official talked about more rate hikes. All of it one day before CPI.

Today in brief

  • BTC hit $84,262 and turned. Daily close $81,742. Overnight low $80,927.

  • $771M in liquidations over 24 hours, $686M of it longs.

  • The dollar index (DXY) hit 102.58, an 18-month high. Cleveland Fed's Hammack says more hikes are needed.

  • Brent settled at $106.65, its highest close since September 15.

  • Monday's ETF number isn't complete yet. IBIT and FBTC are still blank.

  • Altcoins fell harder than BTC. SOL −7.5%, XRP −6.4%.

  • Gold sat around $4,170–$4,180. A strong dollar kept it below $4,200.

  • US CPI is tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. ET.

Liquidation: when a leveraged position's losses get too big, the exchange closes it by force. Yesterday, 89% of the positions closed that way were longs.

What the dashboard says: funding flipped from negative to positive as BTC climbed toward $84K on Monday. Traders were adding leveraged longs on the way up. When price turned, those longs were the ones that got hit. Fear & Greed dropped from 69 to 57 in a day.

BTC: rejected at $84K for the second day

Sunday's high was $84,111. Monday's was $84,262. Two days, same turn. Last week we flagged a heavy pocket of sell-side liquidity near $84K in CoinGlass data. It has now worked twice.

The close at $81,742 sits below this week's open ($83,678) and October's open ($83,556). On Sunday the month was back to break-even. Now October is in the red again.

The overnight low of $80,927 held above last week's low of $80,315. It's also right at the $81,000–$81,250 zone where Glassnode flagged a large cluster of Binance spot bids last week. For now, that's where buyers stepped in.

On Polymarket, traders give BTC a 72% chance of touching $80K before the end of October. Those are bets, not forecasts.

Dollar, oil and the Fed: why it fell

The US bond market was closed on Monday for Columbus Day. The dollar didn't stop. DXY reached 102.58, its highest since April 2025.

Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack said more rate hikes will be needed to bring inflation down. Her business contacts, she said, sound like an economy that's "thriving", not slowing. According to CME FedWatch, markets give a 78% chance the Fed holds on October 28, and roughly 87% odds of another hike by December.

Brent settled at $106.65, up 1.8%, after Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia and strikes on two tankers near Oman and the Strait of Hormuz. Doubts over the Russia–Ukraine energy ceasefire added to it. This morning Brent has eased back toward $105.

Higher oil means more inflation worry. More inflation worry means more Fed-hike worry. That chain has been the pressure on BTC for weeks.

Stocks and Asia: Korea down 6%

US stocks didn't fall much on Monday. The Nasdaq lost 0.44% and the S&P 500 was roughly flat, but chip stocks were weak.

Asia felt it this morning. Korea's Kospi dropped more than 6%, below 6,000, its lowest since July 31. Japan's Nikkei fell 2.6%. Doubts about how far the AI chip rally can run, plus oil pushing yields and the dollar higher, are the reasons given.

Fundstrat's Tom Lee said the Korea selloff could be spilling over into crypto.

ETF: Monday's number isn't in yet

Monday's spot BTC ETF data isn't complete. On Farside, BlackRock's IBIT and Fidelity's FBTC are still blank, so there's no total to report today. I'll have it tomorrow.

Last week, BTC ETFs saw $678.9M of net outflows, the worst week since late June according to SoSoValue. ETH ETFs lost $542.2M.

Altcoins

Alts fell harder than BTC. ETH −3.6%, SOL −7.5%, XRP −6.4%, Zcash more than −10%. ETH positions were also liquidated more heavily than BTC positions yesterday.

BTC dominance is 59.8%, up from 59.5% on Saturday. Money left alts during the drop. Total crypto market cap is about $2.74T.

A few small caps got hit hard. BOME −30%. BLUR −29% after blur.io said it will shut its website on November 12. ENA and NEAR −13%. On the other side, RSR and GTC jumped on Korean exchange listings. That's coin-specific news, not a market trend.

Hong Kong's exchange lists its second spot Solana ETF today. Big unlocks this week: ARB (Oct 16, about $18M), CRO (Oct 17, about $70M), ASTER (Oct 17, about $32M).

Gold

Gold closed Monday near $4,170 and is around $4,180 this morning. Even with oil and Middle East tension, it couldn't get above $4,200 while the dollar hit an 18-month high.

Both BTC and gold bowed to the dollar yesterday. That tells you Monday's drop was macro pressure, not a crypto problem.

This week (ET)

Today, Tuesday: Fed Governor Waller (AI discussion, 3:45 a.m.). JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo and Citi earnings before the open. Richmond Fed's Barkin, 1 p.m.

Wednesday, Oct 14, 8:30 a.m.: US September CPI. Headline expected at 3.7% year on year (August: 3.4%), about 0.6% month on month because of oil. Core expected at 0.2% month on month. 2 p.m.: Fed Beige Book.

Thursday, Oct 15, 8:30 a.m.: PPI, retail sales, jobless claims. 11:30 p.m.: Fed Chair Warsh in conversation with the IMF's Georgieva.

Correction: yesterday's edition listed the Beige Book on Thursday. It's Wednesday, Oct 14, at 2 p.m. ET (Federal Reserve calendar).

Today's risk rule: if you're holding a leveraged position into CPI, know exactly where your stop is today. Yesterday's $686M of long liquidations came from traders who skipped that check.

Today's takeaway

BTC turned at $84K two days running and fell to $81K before CPI even arrived.

No crypto news drove it. The dollar, oil and the Fed did. Tomorrow's CPI tests all three at once.

Inside Premium today

Yesterday's plan: the $84K level worked a second time. We'd written out what happens if $82.5K breaks before CPI, and it did. ETH tagged our $2,405 zone almost exactly. But the Sunday recovery we'd scored as a first step toward Scenario A didn't last a day.

Today in Premium:

  • CPI plan, updated. BTC now starts below $82.5K, so the zones have moved. If CPI runs hot, where's the next zone?

  • 10 BTC key levels, each with a source, including the Glassnode bid wall and the $75K liquidation cluster.

  • ETH at $2,405: a double bottom or the next break? Zones both ways.

  • Whale watch: was the $771M flush whales selling? Plus the Mt. Gox 34K BTC deadline.

🔒 Scenario C: hot CPI + BTC daily close below $8█,███ → next zone $7█K–$7█K

Premium: Scorecard (yesterday's plan)

Yesterday's plan was built for CPI, but it also had two conditions for the days before it.

$84K–$84.1K liquidity: right (second time). BTC reached $84,262, about $150 above $84.1K, couldn't hold it, and closed at $81,742.

"If BTC closes above $84.1K before CPI": not triggered. Only a wick, no close.

"If $82.5K breaks before CPI": happened. We wrote "if CPI is hot, the $80K zone comes fast." The CPI half is still open.

Scenario C ladder, tested without CPI. $82,500 broke on a daily close. $81,300 broke on a wick. $80,315, last week's low, held; the low was $80,927.

ETH: right. The C ladder said $2,480, then $2,405. ETH broke $2,480, hit $2,406 overnight and bounced to $2,480.

DXY condition: one of Scenario C's conditions was "DXY above 102.50". It got there before CPI, at 102.58.

What we got wrong: in Monday's scorecard we said BTC price had moved toward A. We also said A's macro conditions (Brent under $100, big ETF inflows) weren't there. Calling it "toward A" on price alone was the wrong signal. The recovery didn't last a day.

What we learned: a price recovery without the macro conditions can disappear before the data. From now on, A/C is judged on price and conditions together.

Premium: Scenario plan v2 (CPI, Wednesday 8:30 a.m. ET)

Once more: these are conditional scenarios, not predictions or buy/sell calls.

What changed from yesterday: BTC now starts below $82.5K, so the zones have moved down.

Drivers:

1. Core CPI (month on month). 0.2% expected. 0.1% or lower is soft. 0.3% or higher is hot. The headline may print near 0.6% because of oil; the market trades the core.

2. Dollar and yields. Is DXY above or below 102.58 (the 18-month high)? Is the 10-year above 5.30% (the Oct 8 high was 5.35%)?

3. Where BTC sits going in. Tonight's daily close (8 p.m. ET): above $82.5K, or below $80.3K?

Scenario A: soft CPI

Core 0.1% or lower, DXY back below 102.58, 10-year under 5.20%:

BTC is more likely to reclaim $82.5K. Next zones: $83.5K–$83.7K (the monthly and weekly opens), then $84.1K–$84.3K. That zone has rejected twice, so a daily close above it would be a big signal.

ETH: $2,500, then the $2,534 weekly open.

Gold: room to get back above $4,200 as the dollar eases.

This scenario is wrong if: CPI is soft but BTC still can't close above $82.5K. That would mean macro improved and buyers still didn't come.

Scenario B: in line

Core 0.2%:

BTC $80.9K–$83.7K. ETH $2,405–$2,535. Gold $4,150–$4,200.

If CPI doesn't set a direction, the next drivers are Thursday's PPI and retail sales, then Warsh on Thursday night.

Scenario C: hot CPI

Core 0.3% or higher, 10-year above 5.30%, DXY holding above 102.58:

BTC tests the $81,000–$81,250 bid wall. If that breaks, $80,315 (last week's low). A daily close below that opens $78K–$79K, then the $75K Glassnode cluster.

ETH tests $2,405 a third time. If it breaks: $2,330–$2,355, then $2,200.

Gold: below $4,150 as the dollar rises, unless the Gulf escalates.

This scenario is wrong if: CPI is hot but BTC closes above $80,315. That would mean the market had already priced a hot print.

Combinations

Soft CPI + weaker dollar + Brent under $105: the strongest setup for A. With longs flushed yesterday, leverage is lighter, so a short squeeze could move fast.

Soft CPI but a strong dollar: a rally is more likely to stall at $83.5K–$84K, like the last two days.

Hot CPI + Brent above $107 + ETF outflows: Scenario C. The $80K area comes into play quickly.

If BTC closes above $82.5K tonight (before CPI): the market recovered going in. A soft print could reach the $84K zone quickly. An in-line or hot print risks another "sell the news" turn.

If BTC breaks $80,315 before CPI: the market is already pricing a hot print. Hot → $78K–$79K quickly. Soft → a sharp bounce to $81K–$82.5K.

Premium: Options and whale watch

DVOL (BTC implied volatility): 37.3, from 37.7 yesterday. BTC fell 2.3% and the options market barely reacted. If CPI produces a big move, it may be bigger than options are pricing.

Oct 30 expiry: close to $11B notional. Max pain $78K–$79K. Put/call 0.4–0.51 (Crypto Briefing, Oct 8 data). Price is about $3K above max pain.

Whale watch:

  • Was yesterday whales selling? We found no confirmation of that. Of $771M liquidated, $686M was longs (CoinGlass via The Block). This was a leverage flush. We can't rule out spot selling either; Monday's ETF number will tell us more.

  • Funding: OKX BTC funding went from −0.0011% (Monday 00:00 UTC) to +0.0025% (08:00) to +0.0040% (16:00). Longs piled in as price approached $84K, then got liquidated.

  • Mt. Gox: trustee wallets still hold more than 34,000 BTC (TradingKey). The creditor repayment deadline is Oct 31. The last large transfer was June 2 (10,422 BTC, Arkham data via Decrypt). A move to an exchange wouldn't mean a sale, but those wallets are worth watching into month-end.

  • Santiment accumulation: wallets holding 10–10,000 BTC added about 86,000 BTC over the prior three weeks. No update yet since yesterday's drop. Whether they sell near $81K or keep adding is a big question this week.

For the plan: with leverage flushed, a soft CPI has room for a squeeze. A hot CPI makes the $81K bid wall the next test.

What I'm watching

Tonight's daily close at 8 p.m. ET: above $82.5K or below $80.3K. Then CPI at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow.

I don't trust the first 15–30 minutes after CPI. Monday's $84K wick is a good reminder that quick moves often reverse. I'll wait for the US close (4 p.m.) and the BTC daily close (8 p.m.).

If you're holding leverage into CPI, don't do it without a stop.

Thursday's edition opens with the CPI scorecard.
